Gun-toting unknown gunmen are said to have shot two people dead and set a car on fire after storming the election site at Igwekamma village square, Amagu Obeagu in Enugu state’s Enugu South Local Government Area.

On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, a group of armed men allegedly stormed the election center, causing widespread alarm among the inhabitants of Amagu Obeagu.

The horrifying incident is claimed to have occurred when innocent citizens gathered to exercise their right to vote in the election of who will take over the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the local government.

Unfortunately, things turned out to be doom and gloom as some unknown gunmen launched a horrific attack and began firing indiscriminately.

A woman identified on facebook as Maria Ude Nwachi said she was lucky to be alive after the unfortunate incident. She took to her Facebook page and wrote;
“Enugu: MUN I am lucky to be alive, they came where we are doing Chairmanship election and shouted no election and started shooting, many casualties, I was nearly hit. RIP to the dead.”

The current return of the frightening unknown gunmen’s actions in the South-East geopolitical zones is getting concerning.
In the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in 2020, unknown gunmen became a phenomena in the zone, reaching an alarming high until mid-2021, before beginning to display a declining trajectory before the end of the same year.
With recent incidents in some communities in the zone, particularly in Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, and, more recently, Abia (a previously relatively peaceful state), it is clear that the unknown gunmen are back on the loose in the region that prided itself on being the most peaceful, enterprising, and resourceful in the country.
The government’s inability to solve the mystery behind it or reveal the true identity of the group’s masterminds hasn’t helped matters.
