A member of the Unknown Gunmen, identified as Chinansa, arrested by the police, has narrated how he stopped following the group for their operations after his wife gave birth to a baby.

Unknown Gunmen have organised several attacks on civilians, prisons and unleashed mayhem on police and army in the eastern part of Nigeria.

The suspect, Chinansa, who was reeling in pain probably from the injury sustained during a gun encounter with the police said it was a friend of his who got him to join the Uknown Gunmen. He identified the friend as Chekachi.

However, he said since his wife gave birth to a new baby, he did not follow them for any operation. He also gave the police information about the whereabouts of his gang leader, identified as Mmesioma, who was later arrested by the security agents.

In the less than two-minute video, the background interviewer asked if he was part of the unknown gunmen that burnt a police hilux and made away with weapons and ammunitions belonging to the police about a week ago, but he denied and said no. He however said the operation was led by their leader identified as Mmesoma.

Items susch as explosives, shotguns and stolen vehicles were recovered from Mmesoma. Also some of the gang members were killed and sent to be with their ancestors during an encounter with the police.

The fact that the Southeast and areas of the South-South have been subjected to massive attacks in the last two months is no longer news. Kidnappings, ritual killings, herdsmen attacks on farmers, and attacks on police stations and government buildings have all become commonplace, with agitators from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and unknown gunmen terrorizing villages.

The implications for law-abiding residents in the regions are severe.
