The Nigerian Police Force is now listed as one of the worst in the world with a long history of human rights violations and extrajudicial killings. Policemen frequently detain members of the public for probable or speculative cause, reasonable or speculative suspicion, and with or without investigation.
However, as a citizen, it is important to know what to do and what not to do when you encounter these policemen .
Spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, has provided 6 important tips for safe interaction with the policemen amidst the recent excesses by some members of the Nigerian Police force.

In a Facebook post the police spokesperson, he wrote;
“What to do when you encounter policemen on the road.
1- Always observe the kind of vehicle being used by the team
2- The way they dressed, if they are not on uniform, they will be on their approved vest try and know what is written on their vest
3- If on uniform, check 4 their names
4- Try and be attentive, during their conversation, they may make statements that will help identify them later
5- No policeman should search your phone without a warrant
6- Where it’s not being resolved, insist to be taken to a police station
