The Nigerian Police K9 Unit is designated to take care of the police dogs specially trained for security and detecting explosives.

Dogs have long been involved in warfare, and their use on the battlefield goes back several thousand years. They were used in various capacities by the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks, and the Romans, and they’re still used to this day as scouts, trackers, sentries, and mine detection dogs.

Training of dogs to perform as a guard or watch dog requires special skills only available to security intelligence professionals. A properly trained security dog can effectively replace up to 3 static police officers.


The K9 dogs have an incredible sense of hearing and a powerful sense of smell that can enable them to detect disturbances from a long distance, well before any person or high tech alarm will respond.
