IGP Bans Policemen From Wearing Mufty, SARS Jackets, Face Caps And T-Shirts

Nigerian Police IGP bans officers of the Nigerian Police Force from wearing mufti while carrying out official duties. He threatened to sanction any policeman who violates the directive.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, has expressed his displeasure with officers on patrol and guard, stop and search, and other routine police operations who have developed the habit of wearing t-shirts and face caps with inscriptions such as “Special Forces,” “Commando,” “Gallant MOPOL,” “SCORPION,” and other inscriptions while on duty.

For this reason, the IGP in a statement released by the Force Public Relation Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued an immediate ban on such illegal outfits.

The IGP also termed the use of unauthorized clothing as reprehensible, stressing that uniforms, which serve as a means of identification, have been abused by officers who dress inappropriately.

He also condemns the fear that this heinous behavior instills in the hearts of innocent Nigerians.

Therefore, the Inspector General of Police ordered that all police officers assigned to patrol, stop and search, check point, and other routine operational activities wear approved uniforms in order to be easily identified.

The IGP also directed that all Police disciplinary units, including the Force Provost Marshal, the IGP X-Squad, and the Monitoring Unit, ensure that the instruction is strictly enforced, with severe penalties for erring personnel.

The IGP has also warned that if any officer under their charge violate the order, all supervisory officers will be held vicariously accountable.

The Inspector-General of Police, in the statement, also reassured well-intentioned members of the public that the Force’s leadership is committed to pushing strategic police reforms aimed at cleaning operational engagements and leaving the country with a professional policing system.
