Following a spike in Boko Haram-related violence in 2014 and 2015, the number of people killed by the organisation has dropped drastically.

The Nigerian military has pushed Boko Haram out of several provinces in northeastern Nigeria, with help from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, but the group still controls some villages and pockets of territory and continues to launch deadly suicide attacks and kidnap civilians, mostly women and children.

In February 2018, a Boko Haram faction known as Islamic State West Africa kidnapped over a hundred pupils. A little over a month later, they were released.
The fighting has mostly been restricted in the Muslim north, particularly in Borno state, but millions of people have been displaced throughout the region.
Earlier in March, 2022, the US slapped fresh penalties on some individuals who were reportedly linked to Boko Haram.
Six Nigerian citizens were sanctioned after they were found guilty of setting up a Boko Haram cell in the United Arab Emirates to gather funds for Nigerian fighters.
In 2013, the US branded Boko Haram as a “foreign terrorist organisation.” The gang is “responsible for many attacks in the country’s northern and northeastern regions, as well as in the Lake Chad Basin in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger that have murdered hundreds of people since 2009,” according to the State Department.
