Ademola Omoniyi, a 42-year-old prince from Ekiti State, has been sentenced to death by hanging for assassinating his community’s traditional ruler.
Omoniyi was charged with one count of murder in violation of Section 316 of the Criminal Code, Cap. C16 of the Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012.
“On August 20, 2018, at Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Ekiti Judicial Division, Ademola Stephen Omoniyi murdered His Royal Majesty, Oba Gbadebo Ibitoye Olowoselu ll, the Onise of Odo Oro Ekiti in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State,” the charge read.

“We were at the palace on that day for the Onise-in-Council meeting at about 7am,” a chief testified before the court.

Ademola Omoniyi entered the palace and sat in kabiyesi’s seat before the conference began, but the chiefs disapproved of his behavior and pushed him away.
“After the meeting, the late Onise was walking back to the main palace with his male clerk when Ademola emerged from his hiding place and struck kabiyesi with a knife on the road, stabbing him to death.” He had been presenting himself as the town’s king until that day.”
The state’s attorney, Adegboyega Morakinyo, called five witnesses and presented a medical report, the convict’s statements, a knife, and a rope as exhibits, while the convict spoke through his attorney, Tope Salami, and did not call any witnesses.
Justice Olukayode Ogundana refuted the claim that the defendant was insane in his decision.
“As a result, the defendant, Omoniyi Ademola Stephen, is now sentenced to death and shall be hanged till his last breath,” the judge continued.
