The Nigerian Army HQ have confirmed the arrest of popular Nollywood actor who stars mostly in Igbo movies for inciting people to support proscribed Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Onitsha, Anambra State on Thursday.
The reason behind his arrest by the Nigerian Army
According to a statement by the Nigerian Army HQ, Mr. Chiwatalu Agu was picked up for questioning after he was seen doning a full IPOB regalia and asking members of the public to support and join the proscribed group. He was said to have put up a resistance when the Troops of the Nigerian army tried to pick him up for questioning. However the Troops exercise restraint and did not subject him to any act of brutalization or assault.

The Nigerian Army HQ said, going by the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, the army allows people to move and express themselves freely. However, the Nigerian Army will not fold its arms when any individual or group tries to incite the public against the government.
The statement by the Nigerian Army HQ reads; “It is pertinent to state that while exercising freedoms, it must be done within the confines of the law, bearing in mind the imperative for peace, and national security.”
“For the avoidance of doubt and emphasis, the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) remains proscribed . Therefore, any individual or group seen to be projecting and advancing the cause or activities of the group is viewed as brazenly challenging the constitutionality of Federal Republic of Nigeria. More worrisome, was the fact that considering the prevailing security situation of the region, coupled with the ongoing Exercise GOLDEN DAWN , his action could be a tacit endorsement and support for the proscribed group. We have all witnessed the activities of the group take a violent dimension in recent times.”
“Chinwetalu Agu has clearly demonstrated uncharitable disposition to negate peace and security in the region, hence, he is taken into custody for preliminary investigation. It is important to once again place on record that the allegation that he was brutalized is false and should be disregarded accordingly.” Read the full statement by the Nigerian Army here.
