NDLEA intercepts fake $4.7 million cash, arrests nursing mother and others for drug peddling

The NDLEA intercepts fake $4.7 million cash in Abuja, rearrests a nursing mother three weeks after she was released on bond for the same drug offense.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency stopped a syndicate’s attempt to steal at least N2.7 billion from the Nigerian economy by circulating counterfeit $4.7 million currency.

According to a statement released by Femi Babafemi, the director, media and advocacy, NDLEA HQ, Abuja, NDLEA operatives intercepted a package transported from Lagos to Abuja in the early hours of Friday, February 18, 2022, in the Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory.

One Abdulmumini Maikasuwa, a 52-Year-Old man, was allegedly arrested trying to deliver the parcelled counterfeit US dollars totaling $4, 760, 000.

The seizure of the fake currency was made possible as a result of intelligence received by the NDLEA’s FCT Command, which detailed the movement of the cash and the vehicle that was transporting it.

Meanwhile, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has ordered that both the cash and the suspect in custody be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for further investigation.

In the same vein, operatives of the NDLEA also rearrested one Mrs. Rashidat Adebayo, 38, a nursing mother, who was caught in Offa with different medications such as Tramadol, Swinol, Diazepam, and Pentazocine injection ampules.

According to Femi Babafemi, Rashidat Adebayo’s rearrest is coming only three weeks after she was granted administrative release following her previous arrest for dealing in illicit substances.

Prior to her recent arrest on Thursday, February 17th, the nursing mother had been detained and released on bond for dealing in identical substances on January 24, 2022.

NDLEA operatives also caught two drug dealers identified as Sani Isa (aka Bilaz) and Bala Yerima.

They were both arrested with 239 blocks of cannabis sativa totaling 209kg in Hong, Adamawa state.

In Bauchi state command of the NDLEA, officers also arrested a truck marked FFF 422 XB traveling from Lagos to Maiduguri in Azare, Bauchi.

The truck was said to be carrying a total of 164.8kg of cannabis sativa hidden in peak milk cartons.

In the light of this operations, officers and men from the NDLEA’s FCT Command have been congratulated by the NDLEA Chief Executive for their alertness in stopping counterfeit $4.7 million from reaching the streets.

He warned them, as well as their counterparts in Adamawa, Kwara, Bauchi, and other regions of the country, not to rest on their oars.
