In the wake of Russia’s highly condemned invasion of Ukraine, which was ordered by President Vladimir Putin, with whom Mr Abramovich, 55, has previously had strong ties, the Chelsea owner has declared that the club will be managed by trustees of the club’s charity foundation.

The Chelsea Foundation will take over long-term strategic decision-making powers from Roman Abramovich, who will no longer be involved in day-to-day club operations.

His announcement also comes the day before Chelsea’s League Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.
Below is a statement from Abramovich in this regard;
“During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.”
“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.”
“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”
There has been so many rumours in the last few days about what might happen if Roman Abramovich assets were seized including Chelsea football club as a result of sanctions that could be meted out to Russia’s Oligarchs following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
By stepping down and giving control to Chelsea’s charitable foundation he is protecting the club and his assets.
Abramovich purchased Chelsea in 2003 and has been a hands-on owner for the past 19 years. The 55-year-old has given no indication of how long he intends to step down or whether he will ever return to the helm of the club.
