According to a story published on Premium Times newspaper, the attackers reportedly burned down a military van and injured two soldiers who tried to stop them before driving off with all the three buses and the passengers into a nearby bush.
According to a local youth leader, some commuters who got out of their cars to investigate the reason for a traffic jam ran for cover when the gunmen started shooting at the military trucks.
He claimed that some people had been shot as drivers fled, leaving their cars behind.
Chikamnayo Eze, the Abia State commissioner for information, has confirmed the attack.
