A cow thief in Bauchi have been sentenced to two years imprisonment for stealing three cows entrusted to him according to a statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement on its official website, the EFCC revealed that on Thursday, January 27, 2022, Justice S.Y. Abubaka of the Bauchi State High Court, Bauchi, sentenced one Mohammed Magaji Ali to two years in prison for an offence bordering on criminal breach of trust worth N650, 000.00 brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s Gombe Zonal Command.

The complainant allegedly entrusted the defendant with three cows to care for, but the defendant allegedly fattened the animals, sold them, and converted the proceeds.
Sections 311 and 312 of the Penal Code make this offense illegal and punished.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the single count offense at his arraignment.
The prosecution went over the facts of the case and urged the judge to find the defendant guilty based on his plea and the evidence presented in court. As a result, Justice Abubakar found him guilty and sentenced him to two years in prison.
He did, however, give the defendant the alternative of paying a fine of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000) and ordering him to pay restitution to the victim in the sum of three hundred and sixty thousand Naira (N360, 000).
