CP Abutu Yaro, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, has ordered the arrest of four of his policemen as well as a couple for alleged murder.
The suspects had reportedly killed a member of a vigilante group identified as Ikponmwonsa Aikpitanyi, in the Obazee area of New Benin in Benin City, Edo State.
The tragedy occurred during a rescue mission on April 22, 2022, around 11:30 p.m., according to reports.

Among the six suspects in police custody are 4 officers namely; Inspector Igere Victor, Sgt. Umhenin Stanley, Sgt. Okongor Ojong, and Cpl. Monday Joel. While the a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Sunday Egboh were also arrested for conspiracy and murder.

Investigation revealed that Mr. Sunday Egboh, summoned officers to the area after alleging that three hooligans suspected of being cultists attempted to rape his wife, Mrs Rose Sunday Egboh.
When the patrol team led by Inspector Igere Victor arrived on the scene, the whole place was rowdy and there was commotion everywhere.
So in an attempt to disperse the crowd, one of the policemen opened fire, hitting Ikponmwonsa Aikpitanyi in the chest and killing him instantly.
The news came as a shock to the Edo State police command, which described the officers’ actions as “unacceptable and unprofessional.”
The police commissioner stated that actions of misconduct that are detrimental to the peace and safety of law-abiding inhabitants of Edo State will not be tolerated under his watch.
CP Yaro has asked the state Criminal Investigation Department’s Deputy Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the situation.
As a result, the Commissioner urged the general people to remain calm, as justice will be served soon.
