South African Police Service have announced that Maphephi Alinah Mokwena (31) and Mantwa Maria Mokwena (21) appeared before the Bethlehem Magistrates Court today on three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder via poisoning.
According to SA Police, The father of her children, who’s 49-years-old and two girls, aged 14 and 10 years died of poisoning, whilst a third girl (11) survived.
Maria Mokwena gave brown bean soup to the deceased on Wednesday morning, June 22, 2022, before they left for work and school respectively.
At school, the kids reported stomach ache, and when they were taken to the hospital, they passed away. While at work, their father also became ill and was transported to the hospital, where he also passed away.
The post-mortem on Thursday, June 23, 2022, indicated that poisoning was the cause of death.
In the course of the investigation, the children’s mother acknowledged that she had purchased a poison called Temik in order to poison the soup. She was taken into custody and held at the Bethlehem police station.
Mantwa is freed on caution and will reappear on the same date, while Maphephi is detained in detention until the 30 June 2022 for a formal bail application.
