Niger State Police Command have announced the arrest of two (2) suspects, a shop owner and his landlord, Mubarak Yunusa and Emmanuel Okuagba, after being accused of killing a four (4) year old boy and dumping his body at a nearby river in Lapai area of Niger State.
The four (4) year old boy identified as Hussaini Ibrahim, who was until his death a resident of Angwan Hausawa area of Lapai, went missing around 5 PM on May 19, 2022.
However, on the same day, at about 9 PM, intelligence was obtained that one of the accused, 27-year-old Mubarak Yunusa, from the Magaji primary school area, was spotted with a strange sack moving towards a nearby stream.
Police operatives from the Lapai Division immediately arrested Mubarak Yunusa after receiving this information.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to dumping a dead body in a sack near a river in the Lapai region, and that the sack was handed to him by his shop landlord, one Emannuel Okuagba, 43, of Anambra State, who resides in Lapai.
During the investigation, Mubarak led a team of police officers to the river, where a decomposed body of the said missing boy, concealed in a sack was recovered and taken to general hospital Lapai for autopsy.
The second suspect, Emmanuel, was also arrested, and the Commissioner of Police for Niger State Command, CP Monday Bala Kuryas, fsi, ordered a thorough investigation, with the two suspects being taken to SCID Minna for discreet inquiry.
As a result, an enraged mob marched to the Lapai Police Division, demanding the suspects’ release so they could lynch them. When their demands were ignored, the mob stormed the suspects’ shop and set fire to it.
In the meantime, the case is being investigated, and the suspects will be arraigned in court for prosecution as soon as the inquiry is completed.
The police urged members of the public to refrain from mob violence and jungle justice, and to assist the police and other security authorities in carrying out their legal obligations in ensuring that justice is served.
