On Sunday, suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists reportedly ambushed a patrol vehicle belonging to the Nigerian Police along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road, killing two police officers and injuring five others.
This was revealed in a Twitter post by Zagazola Makama, a Counter-Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in LakeChad.
Zagazola revealed that the terrorists reportedly attacked the patrol vehicle carrying the police officers at Goni Matari village, located between Minok and Jakana in Borno State’s Kaga Local Government Area.
According to him, a police source confirmed the incident saying five other officers were wounded in the ambush attack.
“Our police officers were ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in the early hours of Sunday morning,” the source said.
“They (Boko Haram terrorists) parked their vehicles and sneaked through the paraphet around Goni Matari village which was their usual crossing points.”
“They also burnt two vehicles of the police men then ran away on sighting a reinforcement team headed by the Commander of the 29 Task Force Battallion as well as the police CRACK team and Rapid Response Squad.
“The bodies of the two killed police officers were recovered by the police team deployed from the Borno state Police Command.”
“No personnel was abducted in the attack,” he said.
This particular attack is coming after several successes were recorded by the military in the war against insurgency.
Although the Nigerian military is making progress and achieving victories in the fight against Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, the Nigerian government must supplement these efforts by assisting states in recovering from the devastation of recent years and better providing for their residents.
Because internal schisms within Boko Haram have resulted in the formation of a faction that prioritizes a new relationship with civilians, the Nigerian government must do everything possible to ensure that its response outpaces the militants’ and succeeds in re-energizing the social compact between citizens and government in the region, reducing the long-term appeal of Islamist militancy as an alternative.
