ISWAP claim responsibility for killing of 3 police officers in Kogi police station attack

The Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, has claimed that its fighters killed Nigerian Police officers during an attack on a police station in the Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi state.

Gallantmilitaryinfo had reported that the Gunmen, on Saturday morning, attacked the Ogaminana Police Station in Kogi State’s Adavi Local Government Area, leaving three officers dead.

The attackers, who came from the opposite direction, shot sporadically, according to William Aya, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state.

William revealed that while the command lost three policemen in the gunfight, the hoodlums fled with bullet wounds because they couldn’t get into the station.

However, in a latest development, the Voice of America reported that ISWAP issued a statement claiming responsibility for the police station attack.

The dreaded Islamic militants said the attack was carried out by “soldiers of the caliphate”.

It added that five police officers were killed while the police station and two vehicles were burnt.

This comes only days after the organization claimed responsibility for an explosion in a Taraba market that killed six people on Tuesday.

Despite the fact that Taraba is in the country’s North-East, where the organization, which was an offshoot of Boko Haram, has been active, the state had been immune to the Islamist group’s activities until now.

ISWAP’s attack on the Kogi police station could also be a sign that the group is preparing to move into Nigeria’s south probably maybe because the Nigerian military is making the North East unbearable for them.

Several times in Kogi, criminal gangs and jihadists have broken into jails to free detained colleagues and other inmates.

In February, authorities in the town of Okene repelled a gunmen attack on a police station, killing one of the attackers.

According to prison officials, gunmen burst into a medium-security prison in Kabba last September, freeing more than 200 convicts.
