DISTURBING VIDEO: Unknown Gunmen Attack INEC Registration Center, Kill 1

Unknown gunmen

On Thursday, some unknown gunmen stormed the Ihitte Uboma local government area in Imo state, during the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration Exercise, CVR and killed a member of the Independent National Electoral Commission, identified as Okorie Anthony.

In a statement to newsmen in Owerri, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, confirmed this.

The unfortunate incident occurred in Nkwo Ihitte (PU 004) in Amakohia ward (RA 02), he said, adding that two other staff members were still missing.

The unknown gunmen declared in the viral video that they intended to give out the message that there will be no election in 2023.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has suspended the continuous voter registration exercise in Imo state’s Ihette Uboma Local Government Area,” according to INEC.

“This is in response to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Francis Ezeonu’s report that on April 14, 2022, a member of the commission’s staff, Mr Anthony Okorie, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen at Nkwo Ihitte (PU 004) in Amakohia ward (RA 02) of the Ihitte Uboma local government area of the state while participating in the ongoing CVR exercise.”

“The REC also indicated that the state office is attempting to locate two remaining staff members involved in the registration.”

“Prior to this occurrence, the commission had suspended the CVR in the state’s Orsu and Njaba local government areas due to insecurity, and the exercise is now only taking place at the INEC LGA office in the state’s Oru East, Oru West, Orlu, and Ohaji/Egbema local government areas,” he said.
