Despite being President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state, Katsina has seen intermittent attacks by bandits and kidnappers that have taken the lives of numerous people.
Late last year, the Katsina State House of Assembly demanded that bandits be declared terrorists by the federal and state governments.
The call came after a Security Committee presented a report on bandit attacks on civilians.
Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar (APC-Dutsinma), the committee’s chairman, said the call was part of the committee’s recommendations on how to end the terror reigns of the bandits.
The declaration of bandits as terrorists, according to Abubakar, would enable the military, police, and other security agencies the authority to deal with them appropriately.
In the last five months, gunmen are said to have killed around 700 individuals in the state’s Jibia, Kankara, Dutsinma, Musawa, Danmusa, and Safana local government areas.
While Buhari was visiting Kankara on December 11, 2020, several bandits abducted 344 pupils from Government Science Secondary School. A week later, they were released.
On the same day, 84 Hizburrahim Islamiyya students in Mahuta hamlet, in the state’s Dandume Local Government Area, were kidnapped but recovered shortly thereafter.
