President Muhammadu Buhari who doubles as the commander in chief of the Nigerian armed forces expressed sorrow over the deaths of Brig Gen Dzarma Zirkusu and seven other other soldiers killed by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.

The president described them as heroes who gave their life in the defense of Askira-Uba during a Boko Haram/ISWAP ambush attack earlier this month.

The President, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, during the patriots’ funeral ceremony at Gibson Jalo Military Cantonment, Yola, on Friday the 26th November 2021, also expressed gratitude for the deceased’s valor in the country’s defense. He prayed that God would continue to comfort their families and give them the strength to cope with their loss.

Adamawa State Governor, Rt Hon Umaru Ahmadu Fintiri, in recognition of the departed officers and soldiers’ committed devotion to the fatherland and humanity, renamed the popular Lagos Street in Yola after the late Brig Gen Dzarma Zirkusu. This is in addition to the sum ten million naira payment to the family of the late Brig Gen Dzarma Zirkusu and the seventeen million naira donation to the families of six other deceased heroes.

The Governor also ordered the state’s national flag to be flown at half mast for three days in honor of the slain heroes, describing the late General as a thorough professional, courteous, and dedicated to duty.

The COAS, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, who gave the national flags to the Next of Kins of the late senior officers and troops, prayed that God would comfort their families.

He informed the bereaved families that the Nigerian Army would immediately process the dead heroes’ emoluments and provide educational scholarships to their children.

The President and other sympathisers who attended the burial to pay their last respects to the patriots were thanked by the COAS.

Service and prayers were held in St Stephen’s Military Church (Prot) and the Central Mosque, both at Gibson Jalo Cantonment, prior to the final interments, where prayers were made for the repose of the deceased’s souls.

May their gentle souls continue to rest in peace. And may God in his infinite mercy continue to guide and protect our soldiers who are fighting day and night to keep us safe.
