According to a Nigerian Military blogger identified on twitter as @DefenceNigeria, Dan-Buduma was named Operational Commander, around Timbuktu Triangle in Borno State by the group’s Interim Council during an emergency meeting attended by Wali (Leaders), Qa’ids (Chiefs), Commanders.

According to Defence News Nigeria, Dan-Buduma, a feared ISWAP commander was recently captured by the Nigerian Army in Timbuktu Triangle, a stronghold of the Islamist militant group, joining the list of thousands of insurgents who have been captured by gallant Nigerian troops.

In recent weeks, following the heavy bombardments of gallant Nigerian troops, many Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and their families have either been captured or voluntarily surrendered to the Nigerian military.

According to a recent statement credited to a Borno state government official by Humangle, members of the JAS faction of Boko Haram are turning in themselves daily.

“As it is now, we have over 790 real fighters that are currently in our custody after they had voluntarily surrendered,” the official said.

The Nigerian military about a week ago also claimed that more than 8000 Boko Haram fighters and their families had surrendered to the troops in Borno and other states in the Northeast.

The source, however, clarified that “not all that surrendered are real fighters of Boko Haram.”

For more than a decade, ISWAP and Boko Haram Islamist militants has terrorized northeastern Nigeria — killing tens of thousands of people including women and children. They are also known for kidnapping schoolgirls and sending suicide bombers into busy market places, schools and religious centres.

However, reports from the nigerian military in the past month suggests that thousands of Boko Haram fighters have surrendered, along with their family members.

This could be tied down to the death of Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram’s, the most feared commander of the group, who blew himself up in May after being cornered by a rival faction.

One thing still remains clear, no matter how weak Boko Haram/ISWAP may be at the moment, it does not mean they are not capable of carrying out dangerous attacks.
